IOCCG – ITCOocean Program : 2024 Summer Lecture Series
Frontiers in Ocean Optics and Ocean Colour Science
4 - 16 November 2024
Organized by
International Ocean Colour Coordinating Group (IOCCG)
in collaboration with
International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOocean) ESSO-INCOIS, Hyderabad, India

Overview:

This high-level training course will be dedicated to the fundamentals of ocean optics, bio-optics and ocean colour remote sensing. Several distinguished research scientists will provide lectures on cutting edge research, with focus on current critical issues in ocean colour science. Students will have ample opportunity to meet with lecturers for in-depth discussions on various pre-selected topics, as well as on their own scientific research.. The training is envisaged to contribute to the proposed outcomes of Ocean Decade such as (but not limited to) “A healthy and resilient ocean” and “An accessible ocean”.

Aims and Objectives:

  • To provide the trainees with extensive theory and hands-on to ocean colour fundamentals
  • To impart the know-how on how to use ocean colour for various applications.
  • To equip trainees with expertise on handling ocean colour data products.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Inherent optical properties (inversion and applications in coastal and open ocean waters)
  • Errors and uncertainties in ocean colour remote sensing (emphasis on inverse modelling)
  • Radiative transfer in the ocean: shallow water remote sensing and HydroLight training
  • Ocean colour remote sensing in optically-complex coastal waters
  • Atmospheric correction
  • Retrieving phytoplankton biomass and functional groups
  • Retrieving data applicable to the aquatic carbon cycle
  • In situ measurements
  • Hyperspectral radiometry and multi-platform instruments
  • Operational oceanography

Target Audience:

Target audiences include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Postgraduate students.
  • Staff and researchers working on ocean colour and its applications.
  • Ocean professionals.

Further,
The lecture series is open to students from all countries with no preference for geographical location. Participants should be familiar with downloading and processing satellite ocean colour imagery since this is not an introductory training course. The course is intended primarily for PhD students and post-doctoral fellows involved in any aspect of ocean-colour research, but outstanding graduate students with a Masters degree (or studying for their Masters degree), with a strong understanding of ocean colour remote sensing, are also encouraged to apply. Research scientists with < 10 years ocean colour research hoping to broaden their knowledge will also be considered. Once selected, all students are required to attend the full 2-week lecture series.

The IOCCG Summer Lecture Series usually attracts around 140 applicants, but the total number of accepted students is restricted to around 30 for logistical and financial reasons. All applications will be evaluated by a Selections Committee based on the candidate’s knowledge of remote sensing, previous training, research interests and the potential to apply the knowledge and skills gained to current research topics. Academic qualifications and future goals will also be taken into account.

Course Pre-requisites:

  • Candidates should have a basic knowledge of marine properties and parameters and preferably be working in institution which has access to marine observations
  • Working knowledge of English.
  • Participants should preferably bring their own laptops.

Important Dates:

  • Applications are open till: 29 February 2024
  • Tentative announcement of selected participants: 30 April 2024
  • Training Dates: 4-16 November 2024

Application Process :

Fund support:

  • Students are expected to cover some of their own expenses, including local transportation, airfare, and insurance (health and travel), as well as visa costs.
  • Accommodation, meals, internet connectivity, and office and recreational facilities will be available for students at no cost, provided by INCOIS.
  • A limited number of travel scholarships may be available.
